Frequently Asked Questions

What is the First Year Retreat and how is it different from Basecamp and the University of Alberta Student Union Orientation?

The first year retreat is a 3 day long program for new students enrolled specifically in engineering at the University of Alberta. The goal of the retreat is to help you get adjusted to university life, meet your fellow peers, gain insight into the different engineering disciplines, and have the chance to interact with both faculty and upper years that can help you throughout your engineering journey.

Unlike BaseCamp and SU Orientation, the first year retreat is designed specifically for first year engineering students and is geared towards your needs! Basecamp is a great way for new students living in res to meet one another, and SU orientation is a great way to learn about the campus, but the first year retreat is the only orientation program that will give you the inside scoop on all you need to know about the faculty of engineering.

Who runs the First Year Retreat?

The first year retreat is hosted by the Engineering Students’ Society.

What is the Engineering Student’s Society?

The Engineering Student’s Society of the University of Alberta is a non-profit organization founded in 1919. Consisting of over 120 volunteers, the ESS advocates for the 4400+ engineering students’ interests, offers academic and professional development opportunities, and builds a community among engineering students.
